Air pollution and global warming are caused by the build up in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other gasses from fossil fuel use, energy consumption and the depletion of forests. Many scientists are concerned this will soon cause climate changes on the planet with potentially catastrophic effect.
I AM I PLUS MY SURROUNDINGS, AND IF I DO NOT PRESERVE THE LATTER I DO NOT PRESERVE MYSELF. JOSE ORTEGA Y GASSET
Whether personally or as a species, we seldom see what is really going on until we have to pay a heavy price. We are also easily lulled back to sleep with any success. For instance, there has been much progress in the United States on clean air over the past few decades. But problems persist and could become worse than ever in the near future if not addressed. In May 1999, the American Lung Association released a survey in which 88% of homeowners in the United States in areas with poor air quality thought their air quality was acceptable or better. A decade later, climate change may have reached a tipping point threatening the future of the planet. What we don't know can hurt us or even kill us. What we find out, on the other hand, can help us personally and help make a better world. Conserving energy by driving less and using fuel efficient cars, using less energy at home and keeping our homes insulated, using computer energy conscientiously and using recycled products - these and many other simple actions can both save us money and contribute to saving the earth itself.
